The Winona Christian Lady Stars opened the Class AAA North State Tournament with a thrilling 50-48 win over Clarksdale Lee last week to secure a spot in this week’s Class AAA Tournament.
The Lady Stars then lost two straight, falling 48-29 to Central Holmes and 42-36 to Kirk Academy to finish fourth in the tournament.
The Winona Christian boys lost in the opening round of the tournament, falling 80-54 to Clarksdale Lee to end their season.
The Winona Christian girls move to the Class AAA State Tournament in Canton as the No. 4 seed from the North and will face South No. 1 Clinton Christian on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The winner of that game will play the winner of Central Holmes and Columbia Academy on Friday at 2:15 p.m.
Winona Christian girls 50, Clarksdale Lee 48
The Lady Stars overcame a first-half deficit to pull off a two-point win over Clarksdale Lee in the first round of the Class AAA North State Tournament last week.
Each team scored 11 points in the first period and Lee outscored Winona 18-11 in the second to lead 29-22 at the half. Winona outscored Lee 11-10 in the third and then 17-8 in the fourth to take the win.
Bella Roberts led Winona Christian with 15 points while Sara Burden White added six points.
Central Holmes girls 48, Winona Christian 29
The Lady Trojans built a big first-half lead and pulled away to take a 19-point win in Friday’s semifinal game.
Central Holmes led 14-8 at the end of the first and outscored Winona 19-8 in the second to lead 33-16 at the half. Each team scored nine in the third and Central Holmes took the fourth 6-4 to take the win.
Bella Roberts led Winona Christian with 15 points while Sara Burden White had six points.
Breanne Bell led Central Holmes with 17 points while Makaylee Polk added 11 points.
Kirk Academy girls 42, Winona Christian 36
The Lady Raiders had big bookend periods to pull away and take a six-point win over the Lady Stars on Saturday in the consolation game.
Kirk led 10-4 at the end of the first and 17-12 at the half. Winona stormed back in the third, outscoring Kirk 12-4 to take a 24-21 lead into the fourth. But Kirk outscored Winona 21-12 in the fourth to take the win.
Bella Roberts led Winona Christian with 18 points while Sara Burden White had nine points.
Clarksdale Lee boys 80, Winona Christian 54
The Colts finished strong in each period as they pulled away to take a 26-point win over the Stars to end their season.
Lee led 17-15 at the end of the first period and outscored Winona 19-8 in the second to lead 36-23 at the half. Lee took the third period 15-14 and finished off by outscoring the Stars 29-17 in the fourth.
Choyce Diffey led Winona with 19 points while Jake Ware added 15 points.
