The J.Z. George girls fast-pitch softball team had an extremely busy week as they played a total of seven games from March 26 to March 30.
The Lady Jaguars, who are 6-9 overall, did pick up a pair of wins in Region 3-3A play as they swept Amanda Elzy 20-0 and 21-4 on March 28. J.Z. George, 3-3 in league play, played at region foe Ruleville Central Monday and is slated to host the Lady Tigers Thursday at 4:30 p.m. to close out district play.
In the first game against Elzy, Laney Clunan got the win in the circle as she hurled a no-hitter, walking one batter, hitting one and fanning eight.
J.Z. George scored 11 runs in the first frame and nine in the second. Olivia Carpenter and Tashanda Fleming had two hits each as Carpenter had two singles and Fleming a single and triple. Carpenter also scored three runs, and Fleming crossed the plate twice.
Rebecca Cornish, Makayla Vest and Z'jaihdecia Liddell had a single apiece for the Lady Jags, who took advantage of 10 walks issued by Elzy pitching. They also had five batters hit by a pitch.
In the second game, Tyeshia Grant got the win in the circle even though she had a rough first inning. She gave up four runs on four hits, walking one and striking out one. Clunan relieved Grant in the second and worked two frames, allowing no runs on two hits, hitting two batters and striking out four.
J.Z. George scored eight runs in the first inning and 14 in the second. Fleming, Jasmine Newman and Vest had a single each for the Lady Jags' only hits. Vest and Fleming drove in two runs each, and Newman had one RBI.
Fleming, Skylar Matlock and Grant scored three runs each, and Christyana Seals and Clunan scored two times each.
In games from March 26 at home against division foe Choctaw County, the Lady Jags fell 15-4 and 20-3. Clunan took the loss in both games. In the first contest, she allowed all 15 runs on 13 hits, walking five, hitting two batters and striking out three.
Carpenter had two singles and scored a run, and Vest, Newman and Tamya Robinson scored a run each.
In the second game, Clunan gave up 16 hits, walked seven and struck out one. Carpenter, Fleming and Newman scored a run each for the Lady Jags. Newman had a base hit.
On March 29 at Winona High, the Lady Tigers won 15-0 as they held J.Z. George hitless. Clunan suffered the loss.
On March 30 at Riverside, Riverside beat the Lady Jags 14-2 as Clunan gave up all 14 runs on 14 hits, walking two, hitting one and fanning three.
Carpenter and Grant were both hit by pitches in the first inning and scored a run each.
The Lady Jags played Vicksburg later that day and dropped a 22-4 decision to the Missy Gators, who collected 11 hits off Clunan. She walked four and struck out six. J.Z. George made five errors in a 10-run fifth for VHS.
Clunan, Cornish and Carpenter had a double each. Carpenter scored twice, and Clunan and Cornish scored a run each. Clunan and Carpenter drove in one each, and Vest and Grant had a base hit each.
J.Z. George entertains Greenwood on April 9.
