J.Z. George's girls and boys basketball teams are both off to 0-3 starts as the 2019-2020 season gets cranked up.
Both teams played at Calhoun City on Nov. 9 in non-district games. The Lady Jaguars dropped a 64-20 decision to the Lady Wildcats, who led 18-3 after the first period, 37-9 at the half and 54-18 after the third quarter.
Natajah Basin led the Lady Jags with seven points. Tashanda Fleming tacked on six points.
The Jaguars played well for the first two quarters against the Wildcats, who posted an 82-53 win. Calhoun City led 18-14 after one and 43-33 at the half, and they put the game out of reach with a 20-11 run in the third frame for a 63-44 advantage headed to the fourth quarter.
Keldrick Glover led J.Z. George with 15 points. Malik Branch tacked on 14, and Jordun Normal had 12. D’Anthony McGlothan tallied eight points.
The Lady Jags and Jaguars played host to Charleston on Nov. 5. Despite a solid outing from Branch, the J.Z. George boys dropped a 78-62 decision to Charleston.
The Jaguars opened by taking a 21-18 lead after the first frame. However, the Tigers outscored J.Z. George 21-15 in the second period to lead 39-36 at the half. A 20-14 run in the third quarter gave Charleston a 59-50 advantage to the fourth.
Branch, a senior guard, finished with a team-high 22 points, and Normal tacked on 11 points. Glover had nine points.
In the girls game, the Lady Tigers posted a 43-33 victory as they led 9-3 after one, 22-10 at the half and 32-21 after the third period.
Fleming led J.Z. George with 11 points. Tyeshia Grant had 10, and Basin finished with seven points.
J.Z. George played at Amanda Elzy Tuesday night.
