With the basketball season completed for the J.Z. George girls and boys, it's time to turn attention to spring sports, which includes baseball, girls softball and track & field.
And of course, spring football, which gets started in late April and concludes with a jamboree on May 17 at Ethel High School.
The baseball team is slated to swing into action Saturday with a doubleheader at home against Greenville High School. The Jaguars are under the direction of Will Rodgers, who served as an assistant coach two years ago under former head coach Wylie Rhodes. Rhodes served in that position the last three seasons, compiling a 14-34 overall record and a spot in the playoffs all three seasons.
Rodgers has served as an assistant coach in football, track, girls softball and baseball during his brief tenure at J.Z. George. He previously coached and taught in the Greenville Public School system before joining the staff in North Carrollton.
The Jaguars are in Region 3-3A with Charleston, Amanda Elzy, Ruleville Central, Yazoo County and Humphreys County.
The Lady Jaguars' fast-pitch softball team is under the direction of third-year coach Jamie Tucker. The fast-pitch program is in its third year of existence after playing slow pitch only.
J.Z. George started region play last season, going 2-8 overall. They made the playoffs as the fourth seed from the district, losing in two games.
The Lady Jags were scheduled to play West Point and Houlka at the West Point Classic Tuesday but those games were postponed due to wet grounds. They are slated to play at French Camp Thursday at 6:30 p.m., weather permitting.
The track team is headed up by Torrey Dale and Hal Haney. Dale also serves as the girls and boys basketball coach, and Haney, who is in his first year at J.Z. George, previously coached at Greenwood High School.
The track team is slated to run in meets at Canton, Mississippi Valley State and Winona. More meets may be added as the season gets closer.
