J.Z. George High School will conclude its spring football season with a jamboree game at Ethel High School Thursday at 5 p.m.
The Jaguars will take on Leake County, a team they will face during the regular season in 2019 on Sept. 27.
J.Z. George went 0-11 in 2018 under fifth-year coach Ben Burton. Burton said he's had 30-35 boys out for spring practice, which started back on April 24.
"We're going to be real vanilla during the spring game, especially since we play Leake during the season," said Burton. "We are making improvements in certain areas. We just need to shore up some spots on both sides of the ball and stay away from injuries.
"In my five-plus years here, I will say this is going to be the best overall backfield I've had. We'll have two 10th-graders and an 11th-grader in the backfield. But it all depends on how well we block up front and tackle on defense."
J.Z. George will drop from the 3A ranks to Class 2A in the fall. The Jags return to Region 2-2A after their brief stay in 3A. They will face Eupora, East Webster, Bruce and Calhoun City in league play, which starts on Oct. 11 at East Webster.
The Jaguars open their 2019 campaign on Aug. 23 at home against McAdams. Homecoming is slated for Oct. 4 against Walnut High School.
