The J.Z. George boys basketball team broke through in Region 2-2A play last Friday with an 82-66 win over Bruce High School in a game played in North Carrollton.
The Jaguars, who improved to 7-12 overall and 1-2 in district with the win, led 23-8 after the first period, 45-21 at the half and 66-41 after the third quarter.
Senior guard Malik Branch and sophomore guard/forward D’Anthony McGlothan led the Jags with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Sophomore guard Alex Chriss chipped in 13 points, and freshman guard Rodney Catron tallied eight.
In the girls game, Bruce squeaked by the Lady Jaguars 56-52 to drop J.Z. George to 5-14 overall and 1-2 in region play.
The Lady Jags held a 14-10 lead after one but Bruce went in front 29-23 by halftime. The Lady Trojans led 46-38 after the third period.
Senior guard Tashanda Fleming led the Lady Jags with 16 points. Junior forward Jakyla Winters had 15, and senior guard Tyeshia Grant notched 11. Sophomore center Allyson Anderson chipped in eight points.
Playing host to two ranked teams in Class 2A, the Lady Jags and Jaguars both went down in defeat to Calhoun City on Jan. 21 in North Carrollton.
The Lady Jags lost 54-26. Calhoun City only led 11-5 after one but went on a 26-5 run in the second for a 37-10 advantage at the half. Calhoun led 52-22 after the third frame.
Fleming led J.Z. George with 14 points. Anderson had four points.
In the boys game, the Wildcats prevailed 79-41 as they led 24-15 after one, 51-23 at the half and 66-27 after the third period.
McGlothan had 10 points, and junior forward Keldrick Glover nine for the Jaguars. Sophomore forward Jordun Normal tallied eight, and Branch finished with seven.
J.Z. George played at district foe East Webster Tuesday and entertains Nanih Waiya Saturday. The Lady Jags and Jaguars close out the regular season Feb. 7 at Coffeeville.
