As summer moves past it's halfway point, practice for the 2018 high school football season is less than a month away.
Teams have already been participating in 7-on-7 football, weightlifting and other workouts, but things get going for real when fall practice officially begins.
Winona High School is looking to finalize its schedule that underwent a major revamp when WHS consolidated with Montgomery County High. That action bumped Winona up to MHSAA Class 3A after the Tigers played for the 2A title in 2017.
After first being rumored to be relegated to be playing an independent schedule this year, the Tigers were placed into Region 5-3A. Several schedules have had to be reworked. The schedule is expected to be solidified this week or next.
All four local high schools are set to kick-off on Aug. 17 with Carroll Academy hosting Benton Academy, Winona Christian School entertaining French Camp Academy, J.Z. George hosting Okolona, and Winona visiting Strayhorn. All Winona High School games mentioned in this story are tentative.
The next week sees Winona hosting Choctaw County, while J.Z. Gorge is set to visit Noxapater, WCS travel to Ethel and Carroll hitting the road to take on Lee (Arkansas).
The last week in August sees all four schools playing at home as Carroll hosts Kirk, Winona Christian entertains Central Holmes, Winona plays host to Nanih Waiya, and Water Valley visits J.Z. George.
