Frank Miller has been named girls basketball coach at Winona High School. He replaces Veronica Helms, who was promoted to assistant principal.
“I'm very thankful to the people at Winona for giving me this chance,” Miller said.
Miller spent the last five years as boys basketball coach at Montgomery County, compiling a 101-44 record and reaching the MHSAA 1A playoffs every year. The 2017-18 team finished 21-10 and reached the quarterfinals of the state tournament.
Montgomery County School District will consolidate with Winona School District on July 1.
Miller has a wealth of experience coaching boys and girls teams. Prior to taking the Montgomery County job, he coached the boys teams at Charleston, the girls teams at Hatley and North Delta School, and both teams at Prentiss Christian.
“Coaching is coaching, no matter what the level or gender,” Miller said.
He took over the Winona girls team during the summer season and has coached the Lady Tigers’ last three games.
“I have been evaluating the players,” he said. “I think we have some potential. We have a mix of Winona and Montgomery County players.”
Winona girls went 15-12 this year and lost in the opening round of the 2A playoffs. Montgomery County finished 15-13 with a first-round loss in the 1A playoffs.
Miller received a B.S. degree in physical education and social studies from the University of Mississippi and a masters in physical education from Louisiana Tech.
Miller said getting the Winona job means his family will not have to move.
