SENATOBIA - Northwest infielder/catcher MyCala Helms will don a set of new colors next season, as the sophomore signed with the green and black of Delta State University on Wednesday morning.
"I am excited to get the chance to continue my academic and athletic career at Delta State," Helms said. "That's a program with a great history and I am happy to be a part of that next season."
Helms has been just one of many heavy hitters for the Rangers this season, as the Winona native currently leads the team with a .462 batting average. She also has three doubles, two home runs and a team-leading four triples, along with 21 RBIs.
For her career, Helms is batting .391 with six doubles, five triples, three homers and 27 RBIs. Her five triples have her currently tied for the all-time record with five former Rangers, including current MUW junior Madison Crosby (2019-20).
Helms has also split time at third base and more recently, behind the plate, this season. She holds a .964 fielding percentage with 38 putouts, 16 assists and two double plays turned.
Helms will rejoin former teammate Lacey Coatsat Delta State next season. For her credit, the Hernando native and former Ranger pitcher holds a 12-3 record with 59 strikeouts and a 3.27 ERA, as the Lady Statesmen currently sit at 16-11 on the season.
As for Northwest, the Rangers currently sit at 10-8 overall and 7-7 in conference play. Helms and the Rangers have seven regular season doubleheaders left, including the final four against nationally-ranked opponents.
"As eager as I am for my next chapter, we still have business to take care of here," Helms said. "I am looking forward to finishing strong with my Northwest teammates over the next few weeks."
Helms is the first member of this year's team to sign or commit to the four-year level and the fourth student-athlete to do so under coach Chelsea Bramlett's tenure.
