The Carroll Academy basketball teams each grabbed a pair of wins this week, one in blowout fashion and the other in thrilling fashion.
The Rebels hammered Indianola 63-28 on Friday and also took a thrilling 47-42 win over Oak Hill on Tuesday, avenging one of their two losses this season.
The Lady Rebels cruised past Oak Hill 44-21 but needed some last second heroics from Mary Lakyn Boutwell who made a free throw with four seconds left in the game to take a 31-30 win over Indianola on Friday.
The Rebels are now 14-2 on the season and will be the No. 2 seed in the district tournament, which will be played at Carroll next week. This week, Carroll will host Sharkey-Issaquena on Tuesday in their only action of the week. The district junior high tournament will be at Central Holmes starting on Thursday.
Carroll boys 47, Oak Hill 42
After taking a punishing district loss to the Raiders earlier this season, the Rebels with a five-point win to even the season series.
Oak Hill led most of the first half as they led 12-9 at the end of the first and 25-23 at the half. The score was tied 35-35 at the end of the third period before Carroll outscored Oak Hill 12-7 in the fourth to take the win.
Reese Fulton had another solid night as he finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Logan Taylor had 13 points while Austin Smith chipped in six points.
Carroll girls 44, Oak Hill 21
The Lady Rebels doubled up the Lady Raiders as they took a 23-point win in district play.
Carroll led 6-5 at the end of the first and then started to pull away as they outscored Oak Hill 13-3 to lead 19-8 at the half. Carroll continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Oak Hill 17-9 in the third and 8-4 in the fourth.
Gracie Turner led Carroll with 18 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Dru Chamblee had eight points and six steals while Lainey Claire Dunn had six points and six rebounds.
Carroll boys 63, Indianola 28
The Rebels flexed their muscles and took an easy 35-point win over the Colonels in district play last week.
Carroll dominated the action las they led 17-8 at the end of the first and outscored Indianola 25-9 in the second to lead 42-19 at the half. Carroll extended the lead in the third, outscoring Indianola 14-7 to lead 56-26 going into the fourth.
Logan Taylor had a career night with 30 points while Reese Fulton had another double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Austin Smith also ha eight points for the Rebels.
Carroll girls 31, Indianola 30
The Lady Rebels used some last-minute heroics to take a one-point win over the Lady Colonels in district play last week.
Indianola controlled the majority of the first half as they led 9-7 at the end of the first and 23-17 at the half. Carroll started to mount a comeback in the second half as they outscored Indianola 6-2 in the third to trail 25-23 going to the fourth. The Lady Rebels were trailed 30-27 with 30 seconds left in the game when Meri Brynn Reeves hit 3-pointer with 15 seconds left in the game. Carroll then fouled but Indianola missed the front end of a one-and-one. Gracie Turner got the rebounds and was fouled. Turner missed her free throw and Mary Lakyn Boutwell got the rebound and was fouled going back up with four seconds left to play. Boutwell missed the first but made the second to give Carroll the win.
Dru Chamblee led Carroll with 11 points while Turner had seven points, nine rebounds and two steals. Lainey Claire Dunn had six points and eight rebounds while Mary Lakyn Boutwell also had two steals.
