Winona Ranked # 5 in class 3A
Winona is the state's fifth ranked 3A school according to The Clarion-Ledger. The class rankings are led by two schools from the same South Mississippi county. Columbia (7-0) is number one, followed by West Marion (8-0). The two will meet Friday at Columbia. Magee (7-1) and North Panola (7-1) are third and fourth.
Winona senior quarterback An'Darius Coffey ranks high in the state for total offense. The Clarion-Ledger had a top five prior to last week's games that had Coffey fifth with 2,069 yards. He added 310 yards last week in a 56-40 victory over Coahoma Early College, to move up to third with 2,379 yards, 1,387 through the air and 992 on the ground.
Coffey trails Tupelo Christian quarterback Khi Holiday with 2,915 yards and Taylorsville QB Ty Keyes with 2,700. However, Taylorsville has played eight games, one more than Winona, so Coffey’s per game average of 340 yards is second behind Holiday (416). Keyes per game is 337.5.

Stars hit the road
The Stars will hit the road this week as they travel to Marshall Academy on Friday in a non-district contest. The Patriots are 5-3 on the year with wins over Myrtle (48-46), Rossville Academy (49-2) Oak Hill (58-36) and a forfeit win over Macon Roads. Their losses are to Magnolia Heights (42-34), Kirk (28-22) and North Delta (41-12).
“They have changed up their offense and are spread and getting the ball in space and scoring a ton of points,” Graham said. “We have really got our hands full with their quarterback and running back. They do some RPO stuff and do a good job of putting pressure on a defense. It’s going to be a challenge.”

Lady Tigers’ end season
The Winona slow pitch softball season ended short of the playoffs. “We improved as the season went on,” said coach Michael Cox. “Defense improved and we started hitting the ball a little at the end. We didn't get as far along as I wanted, but we are headed in the right direction.”
Allyn Claire Gant led the team in hits, extra base hit, batting average and RBIs.
Now the Lady Tiger are looking forward to fast pitch in the spring. “I am excited about fast pitch,” said Cox, who will be the coach. “Our effort and confidence improved as the season went on. We will work hard to keep improving and heading in the right direction.”
The unanswered question is whether this is the last season of slow pitch due to declining numbers of schools fielding teams.

NEW soccer rule
The MHSAA will have a mercy rule for soccer for the first time this year. A game will end if one team leads by at least seven goals with 30 minutes or less remaining in the game.
Baseball and softball are other sports with mercy.
