Funeral services for Sammie Scruggs Johnson of Winona were held at noon on Wednesday, July 30, in the Oliver Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in Evergreen Cemetery in North Carrollton. Rev. Eddie Johnson officiated the services. Pallbearers were Andy Nail, Harrison Johnson, Jonathan Downs, Hayden Nail, Dexter Farley, and Eddie Johnson. Cooper Burrell served as honorary pallbearer.
Visitation was on Wednesday, July 30, from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Sammie Scruggs Johnson, 89, passed away Friday, July 25, 2025, at Vaiden Community Living Center in Vaiden. He was born in the sticks of Carroll County on March 1, 1936, to Ernest Edward and Lucy Lerline Scruggs Johnson. After his retirement from J. A. Olson, he spent his time working at the service station for first Bobby Joe Johnson, and later, Trent Lott. He enjoyed working with CB HAM radios, and earlier in his life, he enjoyed fishing. He was a member of North Winona Baptist Church.
He is survived by his son, Eddie Johnson (Sarah) of Olive Branch; four grandchildren, Suzanne Johnson Downs, Andy Nail, Harrison Johnson, and Evelyn Johnson; five great-grandchildren, Gracee Burrell, Jonathan Downs, Emma Downs, Hayden Nail, and Harper Nail; one great-great grandson, Cooper Burrell; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Browning Johnson; daughter, Patricia Marie Johnson Nail; six sisters; and six brothers.
