Growing up in Winona, summer was a time to do all those things I loved, such as swimming, Sunday afternoon visits with relatives, riding horses, and the once a year vacation, which was usually to the Gulf Coast. There was a year my sister and I remembered fondly, as daddy drove us to Jacksonville, Florida to visit his aunt Maybelle. Few of our family lived such a distance away, and the drive was long for us as young girls, but daddy wanted to make the trip and have us meet relatives that we had only heard of. He and mama visited family often and my sister and I loved growing up with people who were always welcoming. True southern hospitality was enjoyed. The Florida trip was a memorable one and I realized when I was older why it meant so much to him.
So much has changed now, with the Interstate highway system. It would be hard to imagine being without it. Travel is fast and vacation destinations are within reach now! Some of the best riding trips are mentioned in a magazine I am enjoying now, and they are in our state! So, whether you have in mind a weekend trip or a day trip, here are a few to explore.
The town of New Albany is the birthplace of William Faulkner.
Tishomingo State Park has an incredible history and educational experience.
Delta Blues Trail: Mississippi is the birthplace of many blues artists.
Hattiesburg: Known as "The Hub City" for its location just an hour and a half between New Orleans, Gulfport, Mobile and Jackson.
Oxford and Water Valley: So much to see! Equally celebrated for football and its literary and arts scene.
Waterparks are becoming a favorite weekend trip! Check out the following, keeping in mind that readers have others not included in this list.
Gulf Islands Water Park-Gulfport, MS.
Geyser Falls Water and Theme Park -Philadelphia, MS.
Dunn's Falls Water Park-Enterprise, MS.
Pep's Point Water Park-Hattiesburg, MS.
Adventure and relaxation await travelers in our state parks. Scanning the internet and travel information, there's something for everyone; hike scenic trails, fish in sparkling lakes and enjoy the best of our state.
The Natchez Trace is a story by itself and one we enjoyed many times with our children. The history and culture found along this parkway is a lifetime worth of studies through history, while enjoying a slow pace. When our children were young, they were not happy with the speed limit, and we did hear the chorus of "Are we there yet? " and "When is the next stop?” I was not aware that the parkway is the only National Parkway to commemorate an ancient travel route. Because of its historical importance, in 1996, it was designated a National Scenic Byway and All-American Road.
So, pack up the picnic basket with sandwiches, chips and beverages to set out on a summer of fun!
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
You'll wish that summer could always be here!
