The Ole Miss Rebels based on their win over LSU (4-1) moved up nine spots in the Associated Press College football rankings to No. 4. Trinidad Chambliss passed for 314 yards and a touchdown as Ole Miss (5-0) defeated LSU, 24-19, Saturday in Oxford. The Ole Miss offense led by, in Kiffin's words, "the little short kid" from a Division II school engineered an offense that outgained the Tigers 480-254 yards. It was the first time since 1959 both teams played each other undefeated. Ole Miss will play next as they host Washington State on October 11.
Tennessee scored on the first play of overtime to down Mississippi State, 41-34, Saturday. The Vols had to tie the game with a little over a minute to play to force the overtime. MSU quarterback Blake Shapen, despite being sacked five times, finished 18 of 29 for 180 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Fluff Boutwell rushed for 134 yards and two scores for the Dogs. MSU (4-1, 0-1) will play at No. 6 Texas A&M Saturday.
Southern Miss jumped out to an early lead and defeated Jacksonville State, 42-25. The Golden Eagles lost to the Gamecocks, 44-7, last year. USM quarterback Braylon Braxton passed for two scores and ran for another while Taylorsville’s Jeffery Pittman rushed for two more. USM (3-2, 1-0) will open Sun Belt play on Thursday, October 9, at Georgia Southern.
The state’s only PGA Tour Event, the Sanderson Farms Championships, will return to the Jackson Country Club beginning Thursday. It will feature 1,132 golfers competing for a total purse of $6 million with the winner’s share of the $1,080,000 top prize. The event raises funds for Children’s of Mississippi and other statewide charities. The charitable impact last year was over $1,750,000. Last year’s winner Kevin Yu shot a 23 under par to take home the winner’s purse earnings of $1.368 million. Yu returns to defend his title.
Annual opponents for Ole Miss and Mississippi State, along with the programs' future home/away schedules for 2026-29, were released by the SEC last Tuesday. Each school will also play six other conference schools along with these three annual opponents. Ole Miss faces two longtime rivals in Mississippi State and LSU but was also matched with Oklahoma. Mississippi State’s annual opponents will be Ole Miss, Alabama and Vandy. The annual opponents will be revisited every four years by the conference office.
Number 23 Delta State recorded their first shutout in three years, 52-0, over Erskine College. DSU (4-1) will travel to Barton College this Saturday. Belhaven and Millsaps had open dates this past week. Belhaven (1-2) will host Brevard College while Millsaps (2-1) travels to Centra College.
All 14 of the Mississippi JUCO football teams will have this week off. Last week, Hinds won over East Central, Gulf Coast defeated Pearl River, Co-Lin hammered Southwest and Northwest outscored Northeast while Itawamba ran all over Delta. Jones outscored Holmes while East Mississippi downed Coahoma.
The Heidelberg Oilers represented Mississippi well last Friday night in Chattanooga against McCallie School. The Oilers fell, 21-18, to the country's 21st ranked high school football team.
MLB Baseball Playoffs
The Playoffs begin Tuesday of this week. Toronto earned the top seed while Seattle was second and both have a first-round bye in the American League Playoffs. Cleveland was the third seed and will host No. 6 seed Detroit while the No. 4 seed the N.Y. Yankees will host No. 5 seed Boston. In the National League, Milwaukee is the top seed with Philadelphia No. 2 as they both have first round byes. The L.A. Dodgers are the third seed followed by the Chicago Cubs, San Diego and Cincinnati.
Major League Baseball announced that Mississippi native Konnor Griffin, the No. 1 prospect in baseball, has been named the Minor League Player of the Year for 2025.
