Tela LeKaye Wilson Collins completed her final assignment as she transitioned from this earthly life on Wednesday, July 29, 2020, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford.
A graveside service was held on Saturday, Aug.1 at 5 p.m. at Forrest Hill Cemetery. Rev. Mark Williamson officiated and Roberts and Sons Funeral Home were in charge of services.
Tela was born February 18, 1959, to Robert and Lela Wilson. She attended the Winona Public School and furthered her education at Tougaloo College and the University of Mississippi. Tela had a great love for people as this was exhibited in her daily life and professional career. Professionally, she was an instructor, counselor, therapist, case manager, and executive director. She mentored area youth and worked tirelessly in the community and church. She worked with the Girl Scouts and the Palace of Children. Tela was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Eastern Stars, Heroines of Jericho, United Methodist Women, Winona Women’s Optimistic Club, Winona Improvement Club, Winona Voter’s League, the NAACP, Citizens in Alliance and 3P. Her efforts on behalf of her fellow man are greatly appreciated and will forever be remembered. Her faith in God kept her grounded and encouraged. She often shared her favorite scriptures with family and friends.
Tela is survived by her son, Chadwick Collins (LaKesha), their daughter Lela LeKaye Collins; sister, Terri Merrill (Rick); nephews Dennis Sweet IV and Rob Stein; several great-nieces and nephews; longtime and devoted friend Sharon Baskin, a special friend, Lydia Seals and her children Cristina and Alejandro, many other close friends, neighbors, and relatives.
She will truly be missed by all who knew her.
