Funeral services for J. I. "Jake" Marchant of Winona were held at noon on Saturday, February 10, 2018, in the Oliver Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Sam Riddell officiating. A visitation will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Mr. Marchant was laid to rest in the North Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Kilmichael. Honorary pallbearers were Randy Marchant, Bill Herod, Dave Pratt, Phillip Evans, Nathan Crenshaw, and Harold Cotten.
Mr. Marchant, 92, passed away on Thursday, February 8, at his home. He was born in Flora, Mississippi, on March 3, 1925, to William and Nancy Marchant. At the age of 18, he joined the U. S. Navy in 1943 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. After his service during World War II, he went to work for Mississippi Power and Light Company, now known as Entergy, where he retired after 39 years of service.
During this time, he met and married Louise Burke Marchant (Wessie, as he called her). After his retirement, Jake and Louise loved to travel and made many trips out west with several of their friends. Mr. Marchant was an avid member of the Winona Lions Club for 40 years and he loved to cheer on his Ole Miss Rebels (Hotty Toddy). He was a member of First Baptist Church in Winona.
Mr. Marchant is survived by his wife of 72 years, Louise Marchant of Winona; two sons, Keith Marchant and wife, Lynn, of Winona and Glenn Marchant of Brandon; two grandchildren, Rev. Randy Marchant of Indianola and Samantha Adams (Robert) of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; three great-grandchildren, Laynee Claire Marchant and Jacob and Mary Catherine Adams; and a brother, W. T. Marchant of Jacksonville, Georgia.
