Services for George Vernon were held Sunday, July 30, 2017, at 2 p.m. graveside in Sparta Cemetery in Holcomb.
Mr. Vernon, 74, passed away on Friday, July 28, 2017, at Riverview Nursing Home in Greenwood from heart failure. He was born on October 27, 1942, in Avalon to the late George and Minnie Lishman Vernon. Mr. Vernon was raised in Avalon, and was a graduate of Valley High School in Carroll County.
He was a retired heavy equipment operator for J.J. Ferguson. He was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing. He was a great friend, and he will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Theresa Vernon Ambron, and a sister, Brenda Vernon Culley.
He is survived by a son, Will (Casey) Vernon of Milton, Fla.; a brother, J.T. Vernon of Charleston; one niece; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Rev. Lanny Haley officiated the services. Pallbearers were Paul Howard, Ralph Smith, John Real, Steven Sanford, Larry Wayne Kelly, and Simon Sing. Honorary pallbearers were Adair Colvin, Walter Beam, Al Swafford, Malcolm Outz, Dean Christian, and Jerry Ferguson.
