Geneva Estelle Thompson Adkins of Greenwood, 84, died on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital after a lengthy illness. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 5, 2018, at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Greenwood. Visitation was from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, January 4, 2018, at Williams & Lord Funeral Home in Greenwood. Rev. Lanny Haley officiated the services. Williams & Lord Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She was born on January 15, 1933, in the community of Leflore to the late Robert Thompson and Addie Beaty Thompson. She was a direct descendant from early Carroll County pioneers who settled in the Teoc community in 1840.
She graduated as the valedictorian of her class at Holcomb School in Holcomb. After graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the FBI for a number of years, before marrying her husband and raising her family in Maryland. She moved with her family back to Mississippi in 1970, where she helped to run the family business, Bowie Lane Fish Market for 13 years in Greenwood. She was a member of Leflore Baptist Church. She also spent two decades teaching at Marshall Elementary School in North Carrollton and at TY Fleming School in Minter City, greatly impacting countless students.
She is preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Beatrice Anthony; two brothers, Vence Thompson and Lacey Thompson; and her husband, Wadora “Bo” Adkins.
She is survived by two sons, David Adkins of Selmer, Tenn., and Mark Adkins of Greenwood; one granddaughter, Amy Adkins of Jackson, Tenn.; two sisters, Bertha Mullins of Leflore, and Robbie Brower of Pearl; and many nieces and nephews.
