Funeral services for Betty Larsen Shirley of Vaiden were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 26 at Vaiden Baptist Church, with burial following in Hopewell Cemetery in Vaiden. The Rev. Leon Holly, the Rev. Luke Pogue, and the Rev. John Staszefski officiated the service. Pallbearers were Frank Robbins, Chris Robbins, Jeramy Shirley, Luke Pogue, Chet Pogue, and John Goodson.
Visitation was held Sunday, August 25, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Oliver Funeral Home in Winona; and Monday, August 26, from 9 a.m. until service time at Vaiden Baptist Church.
Betty Larsen Shirley, 91, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2024, at her home in Vaiden. She was born to Chris and Ella Peterson Larsen in Wyeville, Wis. on April 27, 1933. She was a retired seamstress and homemaker who was also active in her community. She was a member of the Live Wires and Homemakers Club, was a former 4-H leader, and drove a school bus. She was a longtime active member of Vaiden Baptist Church where she served in several areas such as: former GA’s teacher, making sweet tea for all church luncheons and events, and serving her famous carrot cake, which was rumored to be the best in all of Carroll County.
She is survived by five daughters, Ann Robbins of Hernando, Patsy Stewart of Oakland, Marsha Burrell of Vaiden, Linda Pogue (Matt) of Tomnolen, and Sandy Goodson (Ken) of Grenada; son, Jerry Shirley of Vaiden; sister, Alice Kitzman of Nev.; brother, Don Larsen of Wis.; nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Shirley; daughter, Beverly Shirley; and two brothers, Duane Larsen and Robert Larsen.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hopewell Cemetery Fund, 29 CR 30, Vaiden, MS 39176.
