During the August meeting of the North Carrollton Mayor and Board of Aldermen, several projects were on the agenda. North Carrollton Mayor Ken Strachan presented a plan for a section of sidewalk on Marshall Road in front of Vincent Chapel Church.
“We just completed a section last month in front of Marshall Elementary School which was the first sidewalks on Marshall Road, and it is a great investment in our town with North Carrollton receiving these funds,” Mayor Strachan said.
The cost of the section of sidewalk is $4,900. The estimate was from Irvin Masonry of Carroll County. The funding was through grant funding and tourism funds for small projects. Senator Lydia Chassaniol was instrumental in working with the town for the funds for the project. On a motion by Alderman Chris Givens, and seconded by Alderman Tom Hearn with all in favor, the project was approved. Mayor Strachan told board members that as funds are available there will be a continuation of the projects, and he is working Senator Chassaniol on additional funding.
Mayor Strachan presented a proposal for cleaning the drainage near Allen Dunn’s ice cream shop and 4K Convenience Store. The proposal was for $1,000 for Double H Services to do the drainage work.
“We have done extensive drainage work with cleaning the ditches and hauling the debris off which is making a big improvement when we have heavy rains and flooding,” Mayor Strachan said.
The drainage was approved on a motion by Alderman Barbara Sheppard and seconded by Mitchell Costilow with all in favor.
Mayor Strachan told the board that the Coca-Cola bottle mural was completed which is almost 18 feet high near Main Street, displaying the town establishment date of 1899. This is the fourth mural North Carrollton has had constructed within the last year.
“These efforts are not only good for beautification its good for tourism is a great investment, and there have been students taking senior pictures here in front of North Carrollton’s murals and that is great right here in Carroll County,” Mayor Strachan said.
Aldermen were presented a proposal from Mayor Strachan that Artist Gavin Bird did with the artwork of a mural to be placed on the street of the J.Z. George High School Jaguar with the town’s logo with the establishment date of 1899 to be placed at the intersection near the old well as traffic enters George Street to the School.
“Under the Jaguar it will read in block letter JZG WAY. This will be great for the entrance of the street. North Carrollton is the municipality where the school is located. There will be two coats of paint with a sealer because this will have to be done for traffic,” Mayor Strachan said.
The cost of the mural will be $4,500 and Mayor Strachan said that it would be good for the school to join the town in funding this project by splitting the cost which would be $2,250. On a motion from Alderman Chris Givens and seconded by Alderman Tom Hearn it was approved for the town to pay $2,250 and Mayor Strachan to get on the Carroll County School board agenda to explain the proposal for $2,250 to be funded by the school. The motion was approved unanimously.
