Winona Police officers discovered illegal drugs in the pocket of a suspect they were arrested on a contempt bond last Friday.
According to Captain Dan Herod, chief investigator for the Winona Police Department, Anthony Tyrone King, 31, had not reported to serve a 30 sentence for simple assault on a police officer in the Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility in Vaiden, which was agreed to be served on weekends, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Herod said on April 13, he got a tip that King was spotted near a business on Applegate Street just north of Highway 51.
“Chief Tommy Bibbs and I went to the area and saw him walk into [the business],” Herod said. “We went inside and took him into custody.”
Herod said when he was searched during the arrest, he and Bibbs discovered crack cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia in the suspect’s pocket.
Herod said he was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance – crack cocaine and felony possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine. He was also charged with a misdemeanor marijuana possession.
Judge Donald Bond set the initial bond at $200,000, but bond was reduced to $50,000 following a preliminary hearing Tuesday. He is being held in the Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility.
Herod said King’s original conviction was simple assault on a police officer for kicking Sergeant Devarius Smith and for kicking out the back window of a Winona patrol vehicle.
