WINONA – A local man was fatally injured last Thursday in a one-car collision just outside the city limits.
Davarius J. Purnell, 25, of Winona died at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson from injuries sustained in an automobile accident that occurred Thursday, April 19, just after 4 p.m.
According to Montgomery County Sheriff Bubba Nix, Purnell was traveling north on Church Street, just south of Highway 407.
Nix said it appeared Purnell lost control of the 2015 Ford Mustang and left the roadway.
“He lost control of the vehicle when he was going north,” Nix said. “He went off the road, flew over a ditch and hit a tree.”
Purnell was traveling alone in the vehicle.
Montgomery County Emergency Operations Director Allan Pratt said dispatchers received the call at 4:16 p.m.
Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, Winona Fire Department, the Winona Police Department, and MedStat all responded to the call.
“Mr. Purnell was flown by helicopter to [University of Mississippi Medical Center] in Jackson and died in the emergency room shortly after 7 p.m.,” Pratt said.
