A citizen who called for help after running out of gas on Highway 82 in Winona is commending those who responded to the call.
At Tuesday’s meeting of the Winona Mayor and Board of Aldermen, Mayor Jerry Flowers read a letter to the board from a citizen who praised the efforts of two Winona police officers, Lt. Blake Herring and Officer Jarquez Evans, and the 911 dispatcher at the Montgomery County Emergency Operations Center for “going above and beyond” to help the motorist.
In other city business:
• The board opted to continue the city’s mask order.
• At an early meeting, the board voted to cancel door-to-door trick-or-treating as well as the annual Harvest Festival. Calbrina Ward-Woods, the organizer for the Harvest Festival, is organizing a Halloween candy drive-thru giveaway on October 31.
The Winona Board of Aldermen and the Montgomery Board of Supervisors will give out bags of candy in downtown Winona beginning at 4 p.m. on Halloween.
Woods asked that participants enter Summit Street from Fairground Street and travel east on Summit to Front Street. Officials will be handing out candy at the intersection of Summit and Front Streets.
Safety measures will be taken during the event, and motorists are asked not to leave their vehicles.
• Winona Park Director Mike Narmour reported to the board that the current youth soccer season is running smoothly. In addition, the last baseball tournament of the year is set for this weekend.
• Narmour did report that someone was found to inside one of the park’s restrooms after hours, but the Winona Police Department handled the situation.
