KILMICHAEL – A burglary suspect suffered critical injuries after being shot by a resident while inside the home.
According to Kilmichael Chief of Police David Eldridge, on Sunday morning between 11 a.m. and noon, a Kilmichael woman and her two grandsons returned to her B.B. King Drive home after church. The woman and one of her grandsons entered the home, and the boy, age 15, went to his bedroom and found that someone had been through his things.
“He called for his grandmother, and when she walked back to the bedroom, a man came out of the closet with a machete,” Eldridge said.
Eldridge explained that the machete belonged to the family.
When the man exited the closet, he pushed the woman to the ground. The juvenile shot him twice with a .40 caliber pistol. Eldridge said in the melee, the grandmother was accidentally shot in the arm.
“[The boy] was doing what he had to do because his grandmother was screaming, and the man was coming at her with a machete,” Eldridge said.
Eldridge and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy Calvin “Dooney” Young were the first at the scene, and the alleged burglar was airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson with life-threatening injuries. Eldridge said he was in stable condition at press time.
Eldridge identified the suspect as Marcus Miller, Jr., of Kilmichael.
The woman was transported by ambulance to Oktibbeha County Hospital, and she was released later that night.
“She was pretty shook up, but she is doing fine,” Eldridge said.
Eldridge said he has not yet spoken with the suspect. Charges have not yet been filed.
The investigation has been turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
