Winona softball bounced back from a 5-1 loss to Raleigh with a 5-2 victory over Bruce.
The Lady Tigers led Raleigh 1-0 through four innings, but the Lady Lions scored three times in the fifth and twice in the sixth. Three Winona errors resulted in four unearned runs for Raleigh.
“Inexperience cost us the Raleigh game,” said Coach Steven Helms. “But the same girls played a good game against Bruce. We had a good practice and changed a few things to make it a little easier for them defensively.”
MyCala Helms allowed five hits and struck out 10 against Raleigh. Allyn Claire Gant had a single and double and drove in Winona's lone run. Hannah Buffington had two hits and scored twice for Raleigh.
Winona's eight hits against Bruce included a double by Gant and two singles by MyCala Helms.
“Allyn Claire and MyCala have really stepped up pitching and catching,” coach Helms said. “Offensively, they're both making contact and scoring runs.”
The Lady Tigers played Forest Tuesday. They have a game at Bruce Thursday and host J.Z. George Friday for Senior Night. Winona goes to Shannon Saturday for games with Shannon and Ingomar.
