The Tuesday night, Feb. 4, North Carrollton Board of Alderman meeting was called to order by Mayor Ken Strachan followed by Alderman Eddie Carpenter giving the opening prayer. Much was discussed during the lengthy meeting. The major topics of the evening are as follows.
The first major topic of discussion was regarding a project proposal brought before the Board by Mayor Strachan. Mayor Strachan handed out packets of the proposal to each Alderman prior to the discussion.
“A few years ago when we started some of our beautification efforts - we did not only the sidewalks but we did the signs. When you turn on Morgan Street going to the school, there’s a sign right at the corner of Morgan and Martin Luther King Drive, and at the end of course,” Mayor Strachan began his explanation.
His proposal to the Board was to put in new stop signs on Johnson Alley and East Alley. The new signs would be higher quality and much nicer in comparison to the current signs. In addition, the street names would be more visible and striking. Mayor Strachan explained that this project would wrap up a long standing effort to refurbish the town’s street signs which started on Morgan Street and MLK Drive. In addition, he clarified that the funding for the signs would come from the town’s tourism budget. Within the packet given out, a quote was included for the signs in the amount of $1,845.36. The 2025 Street Sign Project was approved on a motion by Alderman Tom Hearn and seconded by Alderman Carpenter with all in favor.
The next matter of business brought before the Board by Mayor Strachan was in regards to the recent sidewalk project which has been in the works over the past year. He explained that two sections of sidewalk on Marshall Road have been completed recently as well as one section on Winona Road. This project he was proposing would complete the second section of sidewalk on Winona Road. The approximate quote for the remainder of the work on the project was estimated at $49,000 and is expected to be paid for through tourism tax funds and infrastructure funds.
“That would tie in with what we’ve already done. That would be just like we did on Marshall Road. It's going to add it together, and we’ve got the money this month to pay for it,” Mayor Strachan explained.
After some deliberation, the Winona Road Sidewalk Project Phase II was approved on a motion made by Alderman Chris Givens and seconded by Alderman Mitchell Costilow with all in favor.
The final major issue of business for the evening was regarding the bids for town lawncare. At the beginning of the meeting, the Board opened two sealed bids and read over the contracts included. The bids were from Chase Williams Lawncare in the amount of $27,000 for a 9 month contract and Montgomery Lawncare in the amount of $32,400 for a 9 month contract. Within the contracts, the major difference between the services provided were the stipulations of additional work requested. Based on the assessments of the contracts and the quality of previous work, the Board approved the quote from Montgomery Lawncare with all in favor.
