Dear Editor,
The last board meeting of the city of Winona may have been terrible and embarrassing to many. But the truth is this type of display occurs on a regular basis across America's cities and counties. Things have gotten even worse these past eight years. Now I agree it was ugly, but I would rather focus on the contents and not the cosmetics. Too often when folk are challenged with accountability issues tempers do flare. Either from the side that is being questioned or the person that just can't seem to get a valid answer, or both.
Frankly, there is nothing wrong questioning how money is secured, maintained and dispersed when it comes to the recreation fund. With that not quite answered -- at least with an acceptable answer -- I can see the frustration. Furthermore, many more questions should arise about accountability. I think it's strange how certain streets were designated for new pavement, yet, I think it’s rather embarrassing to call yourself a city and still have dirt roads where tax paying residents live.
Would someone please give me the real deal about this clock, because right now, we have one of the most expensive round-a-abouts in the state. The current stanchion was not the original design, and I mean how much thus far was spent? And, if the thing can be repaired how much will it cost?
Since the question is how money is handled, don't you feel an independent audit of the school funds should be conducted before the new superintendent assumes the position? If it has been, my apologies, but I haven't heard otherwise.
It's been my experience when someone out of the blue resigns, it's usually for more than personal reasons. I'm not suggesting foul play, but when I was in the military a proper turnover was made, sharing the good and the bad. Besides, given how everything is going with few solid answers, it would be quite helpful to the new person coming in that he'll be standing on solid ground and given a clean and clear slate to work with besides talk.
