On Tuesday, June 3, municipalities across the state of Mississippi held local municipal elections. Voting opened at 7 a.m. and went throughout the day until closing at 7 p.m., allowing citizens of our local municipalities to cast their ballots for their choice of representatives. As the month has progressed and the election has passed, we now have the official recorded totals for the 2025 municipal elections. For Montgomery County, elections were held for the City of Winona, the Town of Duck Hill, and the Town of Kilmichael. The official results for these municipalities are as follows.
The ballots for the City of Winona were verified on Friday, June 13, following the election. For this municipality, 1,250 ballots were cast in total. As for votes, Incumbent Independent Mayor Aaron Dees received 192 votes, while independent challenger Gloria Johnson received 478 votes and Republican challenger Jerry Flowers led the race with 589 votes.
In this election, only two Alderman seats were eligible for voting, as all other seats were voted on in the primary elections. For the Ward 1 Alderman seat, republican incumbent Michael E. “Mickey” Austin ran unopposed and received 209 votes. For the Ward 4 seat, independent incumbent candidate Charles Harris retained the seat with 162 votes as opposed to democratic challenger Sharon Collins 91 votes.
As for the other Alderman seats, for Ward 2 republican Chris Herring received 242 votes, for Ward 3 democrat Katrina Bays received 158 votes, and democratic incumbent Linda Purnell retained her Ward 5 seat with 192 votes. For the Ward 2, 3, and 5 seats, each of these candidates ran on the June 3 ballot unopposed following their success in the April primary election.
The resulting Mayor and Board of Aldermen elected for the 2025-2029 term are Mayor Jerry Flowers and Aldermen Michael E. “Mickey” Austin, Chris Herring, Katrina Bays, Charles Harris, and Linda Purnell. The new administration for the City of Winona took their oath of office on Wednesday, June 25.
The ballots for the Town of Duck Hill were verified Tuesday, June 10 following the election. For this municipality, 205 ballots were cast in total and all mayoral and alderman candidates ran as independents. Duck Hill’s Aldermen are at-large. For the mayoral race, incumbent Alfonzo White retained the position with a staggering 125 votes compared to Frankie Curtis’ 24 votes and Jay Hoffman’s 51 votes.
As for the candidates who ran for the Board of Alderman, Michael Allen received 124 votes, incumbent Christopher Caldwell received 166 votes, Jacqueline Eskridge received 121 votes, incumbent Morgan Eskridge received 100 votes, incumbent Shernell Brown Everett received 129 votes, incumbent Likisha Small received 159 votes, and Tommy Earl White received 85 votes.
The resulting Mayor and Board of Aldermen elected for the 2025-2029 term are Mayor Alfonzo White and Aldermen Michael Allen, Christopher Caldwell, Jacqueline Eskridge, Shernell Brown Everett, and Likisha Small. The new administration for the Town of Duck Hill will take their oath of office on July 14, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. at city hall prior to the regularly scheduled Board of Alderman Meeting at 6 p.m.
The ballots for the Town of Kilmichael were verified on Friday, June 13 following the election. For the mayoral race in this municipality, two newcomers competed for the office with independent candidate Thomas A. Rushing received 80 votes over independent candidate Ickret C. Bennett’s 58 votes. As for the candidates who ran for Board of Alderman, Wards 1 through 4’s candidates ran independent and unopposed. Ward 1’s incumbent Earnest Curtis Jr. received 26 votes, Ward 2’s incumbent Bernard J. Daniels received 34 votes, Ward 3’s incumbent Wilma Carodine received 14 votes, and Ward 4’s candidate Cynthia Garrett Curneal received 30 votes. For the Ward 5 Alderman seat, republican incumbent James “Matt” Bennett received 26 votes, defeating independent challenger Callie Firth who received 8 votes.
The resulting Mayor and Board of Aldermen elected for the 2025-2029 term are Mayor Thomas A. Rushing and Aldermen Earnest Curtis Jr., Bernard J. Daniels, Wilma Carodine, Cynthia Garrett Curneal, and James “Matt” Bennett. The new administration for the Town of Kilmichael is expected to take their oath of office prior to their July 2025 Board meeting.
