Remember when mothers ironed our clothes? A day was set aside for this household duty. Mother sprinkled water over the items to be ironed, and a hot iron produced a neat, crisp appearance. As a young girl, I was pressing my own things, and very often daddy's work slacks when mama was in the kitchen tending to her many duties. To this day, I iron selected items, but times and fabrics have changed. "No iron" tags on clothes have made less work for all of us.
I recently discovered a hidden treasure in the closet of a special lady: A wood ironing board! It has no great value, but is rich in memories of two small boys, and later, their sister, as they watched their mother iron the clothes. A glass of Kool Aid and cookies was served after she concluded this chore. Times were slow and happy in the house. There were many things for the boys and their sister to do out on this hill. The house has changed little over the years, but memories are collected and still recounted. We all gather on occasions and talk about the old times and how things used to be. They were good times too.
As for me, I use my iron and board quite often. Many clothing items feature no iron on the tag. My mother and all mothers would have shouted for joy over that feature.
