On Friday, May 10, Mayor Aaron Dees presented a proclamation to Captain Alfondus Rashad Alexander in recognition and honor of his outstanding accomplishments and contributions to society.
“Thank you very much for your service and dedication to our country,” Mayor Dees said.
A native of Winona, Captain Alexander graduated from Winona High School in 2008. After a year at the University of Mississippi, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving for five years, including a tour in Jordan, where he attained the rank of Corporal.
Upon his return from deployment, Captain Alexander resumed his studies at the University of Mississippi, majoring in business. He also participated in the ROTC program, successfully completing his studies, and earning a Bachelor of Arts in both banking and finance, and managerial finance.
Captain Alexander received his commission on May 15, 2015, gaining the rank of Second Lieutenant. He later attended Basic Officers Leaders Course at Fort Benning in Georga. In 2018 he was deployed for 9 months to the countries of Kuwait and Syria.
In 2019, he was awarded the Army Medal of Exceptional Service for his exemplary leadership as a platoon leader assigned to the Delta Troop 1st Squadron 98th Cavalry Regiment. In 2020, he served as the right control officer, demonstrating unparalleled performance, dedication, and professionalism, earning him another Army Medal of Exceptional Service. While excelling in his military duties, he concurrently pursued higher education, achieving Magna Cum Laude honors, and earning both a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Human Resources Management from Webster University.
Captain Alexander was promoted to Captain on May 11, 2021, and assumed the role of Company Commander for Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 155th Infantry Regiment. Over the past decade, he has undertaken two deployments and earned numerous accolades, including the National Defense Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, United States Navy and United States Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbons. Most recently, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his exemplary service and support of Operation Spartan Shield.
“I appreciate everybody coming, I appreciate the recognition. I give honor to God, my mother who couldn’t be here, and my dad who set the foundation for this,” Captain Alexander said. “I appreciate y’all. Family, friends, mother-in-law, wife, without y’all I wouldn’t be here. So, I appreciate everything.”
