Winona Christian’s softball season came to an end this past week in the Class 3A state tournament.
The Stars opened the tournament with a 10-0 loss to Bowling Green but responded with a thrilling 5-4 win over Canton in an elimination game. Then on Monday, Winona lost to Columbia 12-7 to end their season.
Winona finishes the season with a 19-15 record.
Winona Christian 5, Canton 4
The Lady Stars overcame a 4-0 deficit to take a come-from-behind win over the Lady Panthers on Saturday in an elimination game.
Canton built a 3-0 lead after four innings before Winona scored four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to lead 5-3. Canton scored one in the seventh, but the Lady Stars held on to take the win.
Winona had eight hits in the contest as Haley Beckwith was two-for-four with a double while Madyson Leach doubled and drove in two runs. Lennie Wood and Kaylah Varnes each singed and scored, while Sara Rawles and Allie Leach each singled and had an RBI.
Sara Rawles pitched all seven innings and scattered 10 hits and struck out four to pick up the win.
Columbia 12, WCS 7
Columbia scored six runs in the last two innings and took a five-run win over the Lady Stars to end their season on Monday.
The game was tied at 1-1 after two innings before Columbia scored three in the third inning. Winona scored one in the fourth to cut the lead to 4-2 before Columbia scored two in the fifth and three in the sixth and seventh innings. Winona scored two in the fifth and three in the bottom of the seven for the final margin.
Winona had nine hits in the game as Madyson Leach was four-for-four with a double and three runs scored. Allie Leach was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs. Ashleigh Parkinson singled and scored while Miranda McDaniel had Winona’s other hit.
Sara Rawles pitched all seven innings and only gave up five earned runs and struck out five.
Bowling Green 10, WCS 0
The Lady Stars managed only one hit as they fell to Bowling Green to open the Class 3A State tournament on Saturday.
Bowling Green scored two in the first, third and fourth innings and finished out with four runs in the fifth inning.
Bowling Green outhit Winona 10-1 in the contest. Madyson Leach had Winona’s only hit with a double.
Sara Rawles pitched four innings and gave up six runs on seven hits, while Allie Rawles pitched the last 2/3 of an inning an gave up four runs, only one earned, on three hits.
