The Carroll Academy football team traveled to Baton Rouge this past week for the Louisiana State football camp, an annual trip for the Rebels under football coach Bo Milton.
The Rebel skill players participated in the camp’s 7-on-7 tournament while the linemen also participated in a linemen camp.
The Rebels went 5-2 in the 7-on-7 camp.
“I thought we did well,” Milton said. “We wound up going 5-2 and tied for first in our pool. We played some good public schools. Only one other school had under 20 kids dressed out. So it was something of a numbers game for us. We won our first three and our last two so I was really pleased with the effort.”
Milton said while he is not a huge fan of 7-on-7, he likes some aspects of it for various reasons.
“We ran a lot of stuff that we run,” Milton said. “We just ran our basic passing game stuff. It’s really about learning what our receivers can do. We got to see our defense play against the pass. It’s good to see the kids go compete. I thought we competed great and that’s what you want to see. We had a little lull but I thought we were coming out of it at the end. We got a little tired. We had guys who were cramping because they had been on the field for about three hours straight. They got some good conditioning in.”
Milton said he liked what he saw out of quarterback Brennan Blaylock.
“That’s really the first time we have done 7-on-7 with Brennan,” Milton said. “He threw 14 or 15 touchdowns. I thought the receivers did a good job and ran some good routes. We got open a lot of times. We forced it a couple of times but you do that in 7-on-7. I would give him an A overall and I would give the receivers an A as well. We had some guys step up and make some big plays.”
Milton said the Rebels will play in a 7-on-7 tournament at Winston Academy this Thursday.
Field concerns
While the Rebels are back in town from the LSU camp, there are some difficulties for Carroll.
The road leading to the Carroll Academy athletic complex was washed away last week.
“We had to go through a pasture to get to the field house on Friday to get our stuff to leave for camp,” Milton said. “It was an adventure getting out of there. We may have to go to the rec fields to get some stuff in. We can work out at the gym if we need to.”
Milton said he doesn’t expect the road to be a quick fix.
“A huge chunk of the road is just gone,” Milton said. “I had to ride my four-wheeler through some pastures to be able to cut the grass on Sunday. And we probably lost our practice field and that’s a shame because it was looking really good. But it’s got two feet of mud on it I suspect it’s gone for the year. We will probably have to practice on the baseball field this season.”
