J.Z. George senior D’Anthony McGlothan and Winona High School senior Deriaun Townsend have been selected to play in the 2021 Bernard Blackwell North/South all-star football game in December.
McGlothan excels at numerous positions for the 5-3 Jaguars. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder plays wide receiver, running back and quarterback on offense in the secondary on defense. McGlothan made the North team as a wide receiver.
McGlothan is joined by a former Jaguar teammate in Townsend, who now plays running back for the 7-1 Tigers. Townsend played at J.Z. George as a freshman and sophomore. The 5-foot-9, 210-pounder transferred to Winona before the start of his junior season.
Townsend has ran for 1,445 yards and 20 touchdowns on 149 carries this season. He’s averaging 206 yards per game and averages 9.7 yards per carry.
J.Z. George is at O’Bannon High School Friday in a Region 4-2A contest, and Winona goes to Region 3-3A foe Amanda Elzy Friday night.
The coaches for the North team are head coach Tyrone Shorter of Louisville, and assistants Shelby Ford of DeSoto Central, Ron Price of East Webster, Dillon Mitchell of Louisville, Patrick Schoolar of Neshoba Central, John Keith of Nettleton, Tim Wilson of Provine and Henry Johnson of Clarksdale.
The coaches for the South team are head coach Ryan Earnest of Laurel, and assistant coaches Katlen French of Biloxi, William Clay of Laurel, Chucky Allen of Mendenhall, Bobby Bass of Newton County, Brinson Wall of South Pike, Quincy Patrick of West Harrison and Tony Vance of Hattiesburg.
The 73rd annual BBC game is slated for Dec. 18 at 11:30 a.m. at Gulfport’s Milner Stadium. The South leads the series 34-29-5.
MS/AL roster announced: The roster for the Mississippi team for the 2021 Mississippi/Alabama all-star game was also announced recently.
This will be the 35th meeting between the two states. Alabama leads the series 23-11. The contest will take place on Dec. 11 at Southern Miss’s M.M. Roberts Stadium at 12 p.m.
The head coach for the Mississippi squad is Todd Breland of South Jones. His staff includes Sam Williams of Brandon, Tim McNair of Crystal Springs, John Archie of Gulfport, Marcus Rogers of Holmes County Central, Clint Hoots of Itawamba AHS, Ty Hardin of Tupelo, Drew Causey of Oak Grove and Chris Cutcliffe of Oxford, who will serve as scout coach.
