Thomas Rodney Chapter NSDAR kicked off September 17 - 23 Constitution Week with a Bells Across America celebration at historic Immanuel Church. Mayors in Winona, Duck Hill, and Kilmichael signed Proclamations declaring September 17-23 Constitution Week throughout Montgomery County. They joined Thomas Rodney Chapter in celebrating the 237th anniversary of one of our most important historic documents on September 17, 1787. Chapter Constitution Week Chair Norma Biggers placed displays in our three Montgomery County libraries, the Montgomery County Courthouse, WMCSD Career and Technical School, and WES Library reminding citizens of the importance of the document.
Winona Elementary School sixth grade Social Studie teacher Lindsie Jordan taught her class the Preamble to the Constitution in hand motions. Winona Christian School Headmaster Jimmy Pittman, as witnessed by WCS Student Council President Brannon Hill, and Winona Secondary School Principal Terry Peeples, as witnessed by Seniors Emmy Lou McRae and Zaishun Nash, signed Proclamations declaring the week, Constitution Week on their respective campuses. Mrs. Biggers visited Ms. Tiffany Watson’s WSS and Ronald Hammond’s WCS Government classes, offered a short presentation entitled “Our Constitution-A Reason to Celebrate”, and led students in several lively rounds of Constitution Trivia. Small gifts bags containing a pocket copy of the Constitution, a Preamble bookmark, American flag lapel pin, patriotic pen, and of course, a peppermint, rounded out her visit. Posters placed in local businesses called attention to the celebration, with daily radio spots offering tidbits of information, recalling our reason for “Celebrating the Constitution!”
