George Street in North Carrollton which runs to J.Z. George High School is, as of Monday, temporarily closed until further notice.
“All traffic will be rerouted to Morgan Street. I talked with the contractor and Carroll County Schools Superintendent of Education Joey Carpenter, and we have everything worked out,” North Carrollton Mayor Ken Strachan said.
The street washed out in June of 2021 because of a flood, Mayor Strachan had been working with Willis Engineering on a plan to repair the street. Strachan took a proposal to the Board of Aldermen in January and the project was bided out in January to put a new culvert to take the water and overlay with asphalt and put a steel decorative rail on the west side by the street which will match the towns beautification efforts. Townes Construction of Grenada was awarded the bid at $137,000 for the project. Mayor Strachan’s proposal called for $105,000 in North Carrollton’s ARPA funds that was awarded in 2022 and Caroll County Supervisors Jim Neill and Josh Hurst matched with $32,000 from Carroll County Board of Supervisors.
“This is a great long term investment with this street to the school for North Carrollton’s infrastructure that will be beneficial for generations to come. Supervisors Neill and Hurst efforts is appreciated in getting the project done,” Mayor Strachan said.
