The Duck Hill Volunteer Fire Department responded to a house fire at 3069 Hwy. 404 East on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 8:56 p.m. The first firefighter arrived at 9:03 p.m., followed by the first fire truck at 9:16 p.m. Upon arrival, the house was fully engulfed in flames.
DHVFD Fire Chief Michael D. Woods requested assistance from the Elliott Volunteer Fire Department while en route, due to the distance from Duck Hill. Given the fire's intensity and the time needed to refill tankers in town, the department also called for support from the Kilmichael Volunteer Fire Department.
Firefighters battled the blaze for two hours, using approximately 18,000 gallons of water. The house was declared a total loss, but no injuries were reported.
"Thanks to Elliot and Kilmichael for bringing the tankers and manpower," Fire Chief Woods said. "Everybody working together allowed us to get the fire out quickly and safely."
Following their devastating house fire, David Berry and his daughter, Zoei, have lost all their possessions. Two local organizations are coordinating relief efforts:
Duck Hill Baptist Church is organizing a donation drive for the family, with a fire relief fund established in David Berry's name at Regions Bank.
Additionally, Garden by the Pond is accepting donations specifically to help Zoei rebuild her wardrobe and restore some normalcy to her life. Contributions can be made through Venmo (@gardenbythepond) or in person at their store - just mention the donation is for Zoei.
