At the July Town of Carrollton Board of Aldermen meeting, water operator Galen Shumaker addressed two issues. The Board decided to repair a leaking fire hydrant at E Jackson and Green Streets, installing valves to facilitate future water line work without town-wide shutoffs. They’re also considering a new line installation to further improve the system but took no action on this at the meeting.
The Board discussed legal action regarding a locked water meter on County Road 322 that had been tampered with. The town attorney cited Mississippi Code 97-25-3, which criminalizes water meter tampering, and an attorney general’s opinion classifying unauthorized water use after shutoff as a misdemeanor.
In other news, the Carrollton Historic Preservation Commission approved tree removal on the courthouse lawn and at The Oaks. The Board also heard a presentation from Century Construction on their Disaster Mitigation and Recovery service, offering a no-cost 3-year contract for disaster response representation. The Board will consider this proposal at a future meeting.
Lastly, two successful summer community events were highlighted, the June 22 Backyard Summer BBQ, organized by the Town's event planning committee, and a new weekly Farmers Market on Thursday evenings, coordinated by the Carroll County Extension Service. The Big Sand Farmers Market is held every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Carrollton Courthouse.
