October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness month. 1 in 8 women and 1 in 100 men will develop breast cancer. Early detection is a key role in Breast Cancer Awareness and prevention. If detected early, there is a 5-year relative survival rate of 99%.
Early detection includes the following:
Regular Clinical Breast Exams and Mammograms
Breast Self-Exams (to look and feel for irregularities in the breast)
Some signs/ symptoms to look for are a lump in the breast you have not noticed that is
new, pain in the breast, nodule or cyst, breast fever (hot to touch), problems with a
discharge from the breast.
Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital offers Mammogram Screenings that can be done right here in Winona. Screenings can detect breast changes years before you might notice any symptoms. This can help cure breast cancer early. Talk to one of our providers who wants to educate their patients on Breast Cancer and early detection at the patient’s regular routine visits.
If you are 45 or older, talk to your doctor or nurse practitioner about scheduling your mammogram screening. More women are surviving breast cancer due to early detection.
