A raging inferno consumed 130 acres last week, as firefighters battled against time and flames to protect the community.
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, at approximately 3 p.m., the Montgomery County Emergency Operations Center received an urgent report of a fire. The Duck Hill Volunteer Fire Department was immediately dispatched. DHVFD Chief Michael D. Woods discovered the fire was located north of Kilmichael, prompting the Kilmichael Volunteer Fire Department to respond to the scene on Alvastage Road as well.
First responders arrived to find a portion of Alvastage Road engulfed in flames and smoke. The fire, growing rapidly, had jumped the road, consuming trees and brush on both sides. KVFD responded with two fire trucks and their brush truck. Meanwhile, the Mississippi Forestry Commission deployed two bulldozers to create fire lanes, crucial in containing the blaze.
A total of 17 first responders, 13 from KVFD, two from DHVFD, alongside two foresters from the Mississippi Forestry Commission, battled the inferno from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. The massive fire took approximately six hours to contain, with crews working tirelessly as day turned to night. Their combined efforts and strategic use of equipment were instrumental in bringing the situation under control. Approximately 4,000 gallons of water were used during the operation.
According to KVFD Chief Dave Eldridge, the fire originated from a landowner's brush fire that quickly spiraled out of control. While the blaze ultimately scorched 130 acres, the firefighters' efforts ensured all structures were spared, though three were in danger of being burned.
As of Sept. 16, the burn ban has been lifted. However, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to such restrictions. Burn bans are implemented to protect our community's land, property, and most importantly, lives. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed about current fire safety guidelines and to exercise caution when conducting any burning activities.
