Carroll and Montgomery Counties have implemented burn bans following a series of fires over the weekend. The ban in Carroll County will remain in effect until October 1, while Montgomery County's ban will remain in effect through September 16.
According to the Mississippi Forestry Commission Burn bans are temporary restrictions on outdoor burning, typically authorized during periods of drought or elevated wildfire risk. Violating these bans is considered a misdemeanor offense, punishable by fines ranging from $100 to $500.
During a burn ban, any activity involving an open flame that could produce embers is prohibited. This includes campfires, bonfires, fire pits, fire rings, burn barrels, debris burning, and field burning. The restriction aims to prevent floating embers, which can be carried by wind and potentially ignite new fires up to half a mile away from the original burning site.
Residents are urged to comply with these measures to ensure public safety and protect local environments from potential wildfire damage.
