During the November meeting of the North Carrollton Mayor and Board of Aldermen infrastructure improvements were on the agenda.
“In this proposal we plan to make all the streetlights LED with new fixtures. This will provide better lighting, eliminate having to regularly change bulbs and be cost efficient. Currently Main Street is the only street with LED lighting,” North Carrollton Mayor Ken Strachan said.
Lee Ann Reeves, area representative for Entergy appeared before the board.
“There are currently over eighty streetlights in North Carrollton and Entergy has had a great response with these updated lights when we have had municipalities that have went to them. These are streetlights like those currently in Winona,” Mrs. Reeves said.
“This will be a tremendous improvement for every street in North Carrollton. Back in 2021 we worked with Entergy to place the first ever decorative lamps which are LED and acorn shaped lights. We placed them on Main Street and George Street going to J.Z. George High School and they have been a great addition to our town with very low maintenance,” Mayor Strachan said.
The next phase of Mayor Strachan’s proposal was for decorative acorn lamps for a total of seven additional lamps. One at each entrance of the town on Jefferson Street near The J.Z. George football field, Winona Road near the turnoff going to Evergreen Cemetery, Charleston Road near the Carroll County Recreational Park on Mississippi Highway 35, and Marshall Road near Marshall Elementary, for a total of seven additional lights.
“This will give North Carrollton a total of fourteen decorative LED acorn lamps that will be tremendous to our efforts here. The company that did the lighting four years ago, from my understanding, had done lamps in Madison and did a terrific job here. It has been very low maintenance with only having to replace one light fixture in four years,” Mayor Strachan said.
On a motion from Alderman Eddie Holman and seconded by Alderman Chris Givens with all in favor to approved the LED Street Lights through the entire city limits with a cost of $359.19 a month with $2,771.85 charge that will be made upon completion paid with tourism grant funding.
On a motion from Alderman Tom Hearn and seconded by Alderman Chris Givens for Mayor Strachan to meet with Entergy officials for the sites of the seven new decorative lamps to be placed at the designated locations.
Mayor Strachan presented to the board of aldermen three proposals for a new section of sidewalk from Winona Road to Colvin Street.
“All that remained at this location were pieces of old dilapidated sidewalks, estimated to be over seventy years old. This will be a great improvement with being handicapped accessible and building on to our new sidewalks we’ve been doing since 2021,” Mayor Strachan said.
Long Construction of Carrollton had the lowest bid of $ 8,000 and was accepted on a motion from Alderman Edward Carpenter and seconded by Alderman Mitchell Costilow with all in favor.
City Clerk Lyndera Williams presented a letter from Sheriff Clint Walker for a yearly donation to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department Officer Safety Fund in the amount of $4,800 yearly in two increments of $2,400. After a lengthy discussion, a motion was made by Alderman Carpenter and seconded by Alderman Givens with Alderman Costilow voting in favor and Aldermen Hearn and Holman voting no.
City Clerk Williams also presented information on the town of North Carrollton having a food drive which was organized and operated by Generation X Dream Pushers from Nov. 10 – Nov. 15. The drop off location was at North Carrollton City Hall at 114 East Main Street. On a motion from Alderman Givens and seconded by Alderman Holman with all in favor for a $200 donation to the food drive.
