Kilmichael residents Charlie Lee and his wife, Florence, are counting their blessings today after they were safely assisted out of a house fire Sunday morning.
The Kilmichael Volunteer Fire Department received the call at 9:15 a.m. and quickly responded to the 2277 Hwy. 82 residence. Approximately 15 firefighters responded to the call, along with three fire trucks from KVFD.
When the fire crews arrived on the scene, they immediately went to work assisting the two residents from their home. The couple was in the back bedroom of the home and with one wheelchair bound needed assistance safely exiting the burning structure.
“There were two people inside the residence when we got there that we had to help get out,” KVFD Chief Dave Eldridge said. “There was a lady in a wheelchair and her husband. They were in the back bedroom and we had to go in and get them out.”
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to about a 5-foot-by-5-foot area around the chimney in the living room.
Eldridge said that he takes pride in his team and the efforts they took to control and combat the fire.
“I think we did an amazing job with the containment and the overall situation,” he concluded. “They did a really good job with a quick knock down that saved quite a bit of the home. There was moderate damage to one wall in the living room, and that was it.”
There were no injuries reported. The fire remains under investigation.
