Tuesday evening, Oct. 7, the Kilmichael Board of Alderman held their regularly scheduled monthly meeting starting at 7 p.m. Much business was covered over the nearly hour long duration of the meeting. It was noted at the beginning of the meeting that Alderman Bernard Daniels would be absent from the meeting. The highlights of the meeting are as follows.
As the first major matter of business, the Board briefly discussed supporting the annual Christmas on the Square event in Kilmichael. The Board agreed to sponsoring the event in the amount of $2,000 on a motion from Alderman Matt Bennett and seconded by Alderman Earnest Curtis with all in favor. Later on in the meeting, Alderman Bennett expressed to the Board that the community members that are putting on Christmas On the Square would need volunteers to help set up and decorate for the event. Public Works Director Josh Pearson stated that the public works crews would be helping set up temporary walls for the displays within the next few weeks.
In addition to speaking about Christmas on the Square, Alderman Bennett updated the Board on the progress of renovations for the Kilmichael Public Library. He explained that recently, the library was furnished with dehumidifiers to help cut down on the dampness of the building during wet weather, as this is an ongoing problem for the building. He stated that there is also more replacement work to be done on damaged ceiling tiles. Other than this work, Alderman Bennett stated that once the new shelves are delivered and put in, the refurbishment would be completed.
“They’ve got the shelves ordered. As soon as they get those in, we can have a Grand Reopening,” Alderman Bennett stated, hinting at a ribbon cutting to be held.
As the next major matter of business, the Board heard the monthly fire report. It was at this time that Alderman Earnest Curtis gave remarks to the Board and attendees regarding the Kilmichael Volunteer Fire Department. According to Volunteer Fireman David Eldridge Senior, the department handled three fires during the month of September with one being a house fire in Gaines subdivision. Alderman Curtis’ remarks were regarding the Fire Department's work at this scene.
“I would like to congratulate our fire department on how they respond to fires,” Alderman Curtis began.
He continued, “I met them out there [in Gaines subdivision] because the house was in my ward. They are really professional. I am really proud we have a volunteer fire department that’s that efficient in what they are doing.”
Alderman Curtis expressed his gratitude for the Volunteers in the Department who work hard to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the community. Aside from these comments, Alderman Curtis also explained that he wanted to address some rumors and concerns regarding the working conditions of the fire hydrants in Gaines subdivision. He explained that there was an apparent rumor circulating that the hydrants were not in working condition. Alderman Curtis clarified that the hydrants in Gaines subdivision were tested and are in working condition and that any rumors stating otherwise are false.
