The J.Z. George baseball team closed out Region 3-2A play last week with a split of two games against Northside High School.
The Jaguars won the first game 10-9 last Monday in a contest played in Shelby. The Gators held a slim 2-1 lead after the first inning, but the Jaguars took a 6-3 lead with five runs in the third frame. Northside led 7-6 after four and 8-7 after five.
J.Z. George tied the game at 8-8 with a run in the sixth and took a 10-8 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh. The Gators plated a single run in the home half of the seventh.
Hayden Brown relieved Kaleb Mulvihill in the fifth inning and went 2 1/3 innings to get the win. Brown (3-3) allowed one run, walking one and striking out six. Mulvihill worked 4 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs on six hits, walking two and striking out nine.
Brown had a single and double and drove in three runs. Aiden Lance had two singles, one RBI and scored a run, and Mulvihill had a single and double and one RBI.
Michael Summerville had two singles and scored a run, and Brenden Gilpin had two singles and scored three times. BJ Williams had a single, two RBIs and scored a run.
The Jaguars suffered a 17-6 loss to the Gators in a game played in North Carrollton Thursday.
Northside plated seven runs in the first inning and five runs each in the fourth and fifth frames. J.Z. George scored five in the first and one in the fourth. The Gators took advantage of seven defensive errors by the Jags.
Brown took the loss, as he went 4 1/3 innings, allowing 15 runs (nine earned) on eight hits, walking one and fanning 10. Jaxson Mulvihill got the final two outs, giving up two runs, walking one and striking out one.
Lathan Gentry had an RBI single for the Jaguars’ only hit. Lavarious Holmes, Lance, Summerville, Gilpin, Rod Wilson and Bryson Bennett scored a run each.
J.Z. George hosted McAdams High School Wednesday for Senior Night. The Jags play in the Riverside High Tournament Saturday against Humphreys County and Yazoo County.
