Dustin Alford had a plan for the J.Z. George football team in last week’s 46-14 win over Coffeeville, and the players executed it to perfection.
“We ran the football, and that was the game plan going into the game,” Alford said. “That kept the clock going, and we executed at a high level, averaging over six yards per carry. We didn’t throw a single pass in the game. As long as we can be successful running the football, there’s no need to put the ball in the air.”
The Jaguars got seven rushing touchdowns from four different players. Sophomore running back Sharodrick Wilson led the way with three touchdowns as he had 71 yards on nine carries. Justin Weatherall contributed 46 yards and a two-point conversion on seven carries, and Josh Fleming had 52 yards on five carries and scored two touchdowns.
BJ Williams scored a touchdown as he rushed for 25 yards on eight carries, and Nehemiah Williams ran for one touchdown and gained 20 yards on two totes.
“We got up by 35 at one point, so the clock began to run, and the second half went pretty fast,” Alford added. “When we got to Coffeeville, they were still out there painting the field, and we had no dressing room to change. Even the officials told their coaches this was pretty bad.”
Corey Reed, a sophomore linebacker, had five total tackles for the defense. Nehemiah Williams had four solo stops and one assist, and Camelo Fleming had four solo tackles. Tyler Duren had three tackles and a fumble recovery.
The Jaguars look to gain their second win of the young season as they entertain McAdams High School, which is 2-0 after getting a forfeit win in its first game and beating Discovery Christian 58-12 last week.
“They are going to be very athletic with a lot of speed,” said Alford. “We need to have success on offense to keep them off the field. I know they have a new coach, so I’m not sure what all to expect.
“I was on staff there when the juniors and seniors were in junior high. I was the junior high coach, baseball coach and a teacher.”
