The month of June is a busy month, with Flag Day falling on the 14th, Father's Day on Sunday, June 15, and the first day of summer on June 20. Father's Day is always celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in June. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law declaring that Father's Day be celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June. It has been an official, permanent national holiday since.
National Boone Day is observed each year on June 7 to commemorate the day, June 7, 1769, Daniel Boone first began exploring the valleys and forests of the present-day Bluegrass State of Kentucky. James Fenimore Cooper wrote The Last of the Mohicans, and used the capture and rescue of Boone's daughter, Jemima, as an inspiration for the book. While the story of Jemima's abduction and rescue is a historical event, Cooper fictionalized it and incorporated it as a story of frontier life and conflict between settlers and Native Americans. Daniel Boone never really prospered, never got rich - it was his courage that made him famous. Many will remember the television series that aired from 1964-1970 of Fess Parker playing the part of the Daniel Boone.
