J.Z. George High School coach Dustin Alford will get to see how far along his team has come as the Jaguars head to Avon to take on Ruleville in the Riverside High School jamboree.
Game time is slated for 6 p.m. Friday.
“We played an intra-squad scrimmage a week ago, but it’s going to be good to face off against another team,” said Alford. “We need that game-type setting, and we need to see how some of these young kids respond when the lights come on. We need to see some guys step up and show us they are ready to get on the field.”
In other games in the jamboree, Riverside will play the Greenville High junior varsity team at 5 p.m., and the Greenville varsity squad will take on O’Bannon at 7 p.m.
“Ruleville has some nice-looking kids from last year,” Alford said. “We need to play technique sound football. They will probably have more numbers on the team. We need to come out of this game injury-free. We are already dealing with some nagging injuries. Once this season gets started, there won’t be any breaks. We don’t have an open date this season. The heat is what it is in August. We are all dealing with it. We just have to take precautions.”
Alford is in his third year at the helm of the Jaguar football program. They were 2-7 last season and failed to make the playoffs. J.Z. George opens the season Aug. 29 at home against Ethel High School.
