Hot summer days are still present! A salad would be a perfect choice for any seasonal meal. I remember how Mother prized her wooden salad bowl and the small serving bowls. It was a treat to watch her craft a delicious salad, perfect on days that were too hot for cooking on the stove. As I was scanning Amazon this morning, it was interesting to see the many wood variations of bowls. We all enjoyed home-grown lettuce with garden fresh tomatoes and sweet onions, topped off with vinegar or home-made Thousand Island, which I still prefer.
In the United States, from the 1940's to the 1960's, wooden salad bowls were recommended by many cook books. This fashion was started by a restaurant owner and food writer George Rector, who wrote a column entitled "Salad Daze", which helped put Americans in the habit of a green salad. No matter what bowl you choose, a salad can include many of your favorites. A good example is a salad bar, and your home pantry would contain other items to include.
A dish that mother prepared, and one we all enjoyed, was biscuits, topped with red-eye gravy, chopped country ham and sliced sweet onions. My sister and I ate every bite. It's been years since I prepared "her" dish, but I think I must give it a try...Maybe a cooler day...
In a previous article, I stated that technology has come a long way, sometimes leaving us senior adults a bit puzzled! Here is an example, from a favorite magazine.
Just because my mother likes her new cellphone doesn't mean she knows how it works. While on the phone with her, I noticed that she seemed reluctant to wrap up the call. I felt touched that she didn't want our chat to end. That is, until after numerous exchanged goodbyes, she muttered softly, "I really need to learn how to hang up this phone".
