The Georgia Bulldogs found a way to stop the Ole Miss offense in the final quarter to down the Rebels, 43-35. The Bulldogs outscored Ole Miss, 17-0, in the final quarter to give the Rebels their first loss of the season. Ole Miss (6-1, 3-1) started out fast and scored on their first five offensive possessions of the contest before Georgia (6-1, 4-1) finally forced the Rebels to punt with 12:44 remaining in the game. From that point on the Ole Miss offense lost its magic and could not even register a first down. Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss led his team to a 35-26 lead after three quarters as he excelled at both running and passing. Chambliss passed for 263 yards and a touchdown while rushing for two more touchdowns. Bulldog quarterback Gunner Stockton passed for 289 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for another. Ole Miss fell only three spots in the AP rankings to eighth. The Rebels travel to No. 13 Oklahoma (6-1,2-1) this Saturday morning.
Southern Miss quarterback Braylon Braxton threw a school record 98-yard TD pass to Micah Davis in the third quarter to lead the Golden Eagles to a 22-10 win over homestanding Louisiana-Lafayette. Braxton finished the day 13-of-18 for 238 yards and a TD while Jeffery Pittman added 73 yards rushing. The feisty Golden Eagle defense came up with two interceptions and a safety. The Golden Eagles are 3-0 in conference play and are tied for first with Troy in the SBC Western Division standings. USM (5-2) will host ULM (3-4, 1-2) this Saturday afternoon.
Mississippi State lost a heartbreaker at Florida (3-4, 2-2) as the Bulldogs turned the ball over with 26 seconds to go as they fell to the Gators, 23-21. The Bulldogs had driven from their own 28 yard line to the Florida 29 yard line in hopes of attempting a game winning field goal. The final MSU play was a pass that was intercepted by a Florida defensive tackle. Blake Shapen passed for 324 yards while Davon Booth ran for 105 yards and two scores for MSU. Mississippi State (4-3, 0-3) hosts No. 22 Texas (5-2, 2-1) this Saturday afternoon. Despite the win, Florida head coach Billy Napier was fired Sunday morning.
The SEC has ten teams in the Top 25 rankings this week. Texas A&M is third followed by Alabama and Georgia at four and five. Ole Miss is eighth with Vandy ranked tenth for the first time since 1947. Oklahoma is 13th, Missouri 15th, Tennessee 17th, LSU 20th and Texas 22nd. The Big10 has five teams led by No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Indiana. The ACC and Big 12 each have four teams in the top 25.
Ole Miss, Miami, Memphis, Texas Tech and UNLV all fell from the unbeaten ranks last week. Only Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M, Georgia Tech, BYU and Navy remain perfect in Division 1 football play.
Delta State routed Ferrum, 51-10, to improve to 6-1 overall. The Statesmen travel to once beaten West Alabama (5-1) to open Gulf South Conference play Saturday.
Belhaven ran past Greensboro, 41-26. The Blazers (4-2, 3-0) host Methodist this Saturday. Millsaps upset previously undefeated Maryville, 31-21. The Majors (4-2, 2-1) travel to Berry College this week.
Jackson State (5-1, 3-0) had a bye week as they prepare to travel to Las Vegas this Saturday to play Grambling (4-3, 1-2). Mississippi Valley (1-5) romped to a 49-0 win over helpless Lincoln College this past Saturday. Alcorn (1-5, 0-2) lost a heartbreaker to Florida A&M, 33-28. The Braves host Mississippi Valley this Saturday.
In JUCO action, Co-Lin upset unbeaten Gulf Coast, creating a tie for first in the South Division. Other winners were East Central, Hinds, Itawamba, East Mississippi, Northeast and Northwest. The big game this Thursday has Northwest visiting Holmes on Thursday in a key North Division contest.
The L.A. Dodgers will play the American League champs in the World Series that begins Friday.
