Winona boys and girls track teams continued their strong performances with championships at the 2A North State meet last Saturday at the Eugene Harris Memorial Track.
The girls won six events and finished with 145 points, 60 more than runner-up Calhoun City. The Tigers had three first place performances and 123 points to 98½ for second place O'Bannon.
Junior Krystle Hughes was again the individual standout for Winona with three firsts. She won the 100 with a time of 12.54, the 200 (25.80) and the high jump at 4-9 and was fourth in the long jump, totaling 35 points.
Other Lady Tigers who won blue ribbons were Lataria Ellis in the 100 hurdles (19.28), Tyra Weathersby in the triple jump (35-8) and her sister Natori Weathersby in the discus (104-2½). Tyra Weathersby also took second in the long jump, third in the 400 and fourth in the 200. Ellis was second in the high jump and Natori Weathersby fourth in the shot put.
Boys winners were Andarious Coffey in the triple jump (38-9), Jalyn Phillips in the discus (127-9½) and the 400 relay team of Jaylyn Sanders, Tracy Chandler, Adavion Hargrove and Ahmad Robinson with a time of 44.95. The same four runners took second in the 800 relay. Chandler and Robinson also ran on the 1600 relay team with Malcolm Gholston and Jabrell Davis that finished third.
Top four in each event qualified for the state meet to be held Friday at Pearl High School. Other girls who qualified were Jayla Campbell, second in the 100 hurdles, Latericka Finchis, third in the shot put and fourth in the discus, and Aasjahla Garron, fourth in the pole vault.
Tyra Weathersby won the long jump and her sister was first in the discus at last year's 2A state meet, leading the Lady Tigers to a third place finish. Hughes was fourth in the 100 and the 200.
Other boys to qualify for the state meet were Chandler, second in the 400, Phillips, third in the shot put, Tavares Townsend, third in the triple jump, Hargrove, fourth in the 110 hurdles and Gholston, fourth in the 400. Dalton Murphy, Isaac Leech and Derrick Blaylock finished second, third and fourth in the pole vault, giving Winona 19 points in the event.
